The Freighter Far Ranger Ambushed Near the Twin Stars
The Last JediThe Freighter Far Ranger Ambushed Near the Twin Stars is a pursuit that turns into a coordinated Imperial trap. Jax Pavan’s attempt to escape by threading the Far Ranger between the deadly binary stars buys the crew no safe passage: the force pursuing them closes around the freighter, and Darth Vader’s presence transforms a desperate flight into a fight for survival aboard a ship being boarded.
The Pursuit Becomes a Trap
Jax and Laranth Tarak arrive on the bridge with the warning that Vader is after them. Jax orders the Far Ranger out of hyperspace to contact its escort, but normal space offers no refuge. Ships emerge all around the freighter, forming a rough half sphere and advancing to cut off retreat. The Twins blaze millions of kilometers away, their dangerous display setting the scene for the narrow escape Jax will choose.
The scale of the force makes the mismatch unmistakable: Jax counts twenty enemy ships against one small rogue freighter. Den Dhur asks whether Jax has a plan, while Laranth asks whether the ships are Imperial. Jax does not answer either question directly. Instead, he identifies the danger in a few words: Vader knows they are aboard. The fleet’s appearance is thus more than an encounter with a patrol; the pursuit has found its intended target.
Jax proposes squeezing between the Twins. Den, unwilling to hear more, leaves the bridge to reach Thi Xon Yimmon. I-Five points out the extremity of the plan: it means diving between two disintegrating stars. Jax accepts the risk because he considers it preferable to the alternative. Once the controls are transferred to his station, he drives the Far Ranger forward into the brilliant stream of matter and energy between the stars, with Imperial ships closing in from behind and from the flanks.
Vader’s Forces Close the Net
The pursuing contingent is identified as the 501st Legion, Vader’s attack fleet, also known as Vader’s Fist. Jax sees a formation of frigates, attack corvettes, and TIE fighters, with a larger cruiser hanging back. He suspects that the cruiser’s gravity generators pulled the Far Ranger out of hyperspace. He does not reach out through the Force to determine which ship carries Vader: knowing that Vader is among the pursuing force is enough to shape the crew’s choices.
The Far Ranger emerges from the binary storm into a pocket of more ships. Jax turns the vessel end over end to escape back the way it came, but five ships appear through the Twins’ torrent and block that route. He knows without probing that Vader is aboard the central ship. Jax orders the crew to fire everything they have. Laranth and Den respond with the freighter’s laser and charged-particle batteries, concentrating the dorsal battery’s fire on the central vessel. Laranth understands the stakes of letting that ship close: Vader must not be allowed to board.
Stasis and Reversal
The engagement changes abruptly when time seems to stand still. Jax experiences the transition as a fall into water, with forward momentum replaced by a floating stillness. The Far Ranger has entered a stasis field. Its effect slows both the vessel and Jax’s thoughts, but his Jedi training helps him resist being frozen completely. The field is particularly puzzling because a ship as small as Vader’s cruiser should not be able to generate one on its own.
Jax works out the mechanism by studying the arrangement of the 501st ships on his heads-up display. The five vessels are generating the field together, each contributing a section of its invisible web as they move in a precise formation. Vader, perhaps accompanied by a select group of Imperial Inquisitors, is likely responsible for the coordination. The trap is not a single ship’s impossible weapon but a formation functioning as one system. Jax understands how it works, but the Far Ranger is already being drawn toward the flagship, and his attempt to reverse course cannot break free.
Then subjective time returns to normal. The enemy has abandoned the stasis field for a more effective tractor beam. That change gives Jax an opportunity, but not a clear escape: he immediately orders all hands to abandon ship, activates the escape klaxon, and runs aft. The shift from frozen helplessness to urgent evacuation is a reversal in the crew’s prospects, not a victory. The Far Ranger remains under enemy control, and the threat has moved from ships surrounding them to Imperial troops entering the vessel.
Boarding and the Crew’s Separation
The abandon-ship order reaches Den while he is at the weapons station. Disoriented by the sudden end of the vessel’s plummet, he tumbles from the gimbaled chair onto the platform beneath it. From amidships on the lower deck, I-Five reports that they are being boarded through the cargo bay on the port side and that he is heading up. Den says he is on his way and bolts for a ladder, only to hear metal groan nearby and flee toward the stern.
The encounter therefore ends in motion rather than resolution. Jax’s gamble carried the Far Ranger into the Twins’ storm, but the Imperial force had arranged a second enclosure beyond it; the coordinated stasis field failed to hold the freighter, yet the tractor beam brought the attackers close enough to board. The crew’s evacuation order and scattered attempts to find one another leave their immediate fate unresolved in this scene. The ambush’s defining contrast is between the immense precision of the Imperial formation and the improvised, divided actions of a small crew trying to escape it.
